As Rock Row Health Center establishes itself as a premier destination for cancer care in Maine, creating a welcoming and uplifting patient experience was a central design priority. Mey & Co was engaged to shape the reception and waiting areas, drawing heavily on the work of local artisans to create a space that feels distinctly connected to Maine’s creative community.
Lighting was carefully integrated to support and celebrate these artistic elements. Behind the reception desk, a custom mobile crafted by a local maker serves as a focal point within the entry sequence. Semi-recessed adjustable luminaires with wide flood optics were discreetly incorporated into the surrounding millwork, providing balanced illumination that enhances the artwork's form and movement while keeping the light source itself out of view.
The primary feature wall within the waiting area showcases eighteen monochromatic ceramic vessels created by Maine craftspeople. Illuminating an installation of this scale required a tailored wall-washing strategy that would evenly reveal texture, depth, and craftsmanship without competing for attention. A suspended linear wall wash fixture was selected to provide uniform vertical illumination across the entire display, allowing the artwork to remain the visual centerpiece of the space.
Even the wayfinding arrival experience was thoughtfully considered. Small landscape accent lights are integrated within a living plant installation to illuminate custom acrylic wayfinding signage, creating a warm and welcoming first impression. Throughout the project, lighting serves as a quiet supporting element - guiding visitors, highlighting local artistry, and contributing to an environment that feels both professional and deeply human.
