New England Ocean Cluster
Portland, ME | Interiors: Salt of Maine Design Co. | Construction: Optimum Construction | Photography: Michael Wilson
Anchored in the heart of Portland’s working waterfront, the New England Ocean Cluster (NEOC) was conceived as a co-working hub for ocean-focused start-ups, non-profits, and small businesses. With design direction led by Janeen Arnold of Salt of Maine Design Co., the space was shaped by a clear vision and a modest budget, calling for thoughtful, strategic design decisions that prioritized functionality without compromising character.
The lighting design reflects this careful balance. Simple, linear fixtures were selected for their clean aesthetic and high performance, delivering even, glare-free illumination across workspaces while maintaining a streamlined profile. Architectural cylinders and subtle ambient sources were integrated within the open ceiling to support visual comfort and task performance, all while allowing Janeen’s decorative lighting selections to take the visual lead.
In commercial environments like this, success lies in creating lighting systems that serve their purpose with minimal visual noise. At NEOC, that meant leveraging every fixture to do more, contributing to a warm, collaborative atmosphere that feels both professional and inviting. Today, the space has become a vibrant hub for many of Portland’s most recognizable and innovative ocean-driven brands.
