High Point
South Kingston, RI | Architect: Whitten Architects
Set on a remarkable coastal site nearly encircled by water, this full rebuild was designed to support a growing multi-generational family while honoring the spirit of the original home. The architecture embraces a quiet timelessness - favoring natural materials, clean forms, and a careful balance of function and artistry.
Lighting played a key role in creating intimate moments within the layout. The design highlights the homeowners’ - one of whom is an artist - personal artwork, with intentionally placed lighting that elevates each piece without overpowering the space. Organic pendant forms, reminiscent of sea-smoothed pebbles, create a sculptural focal point along the central stair.
Residential zones incorporate thoughtful age-in-place strategies, such as low-glare step lighting to support both safety and ambiance. Throughout, the lighting gently reinforces material richness and coastal serenity, supporting both daily life and the home’s long-term adaptability.
Hosting is central to the owners’ lifestyle, and a dedicated covered pavilion was commissioned for larger gatherings. Exterior fixtures with natural finishes accentuate the pavilion’s timber roof structure and were selected to gracefully weather in the coastal environment, offering both durability and visual harmony with the surrounding landscape.
