Boothbay Modern

Perched along the water in Boothbay, Maine, this two-story home was envisioned as a modern forever home that would reflect the clients’ personal style while standing apart from the region’s more traditional architecture. The lighting design was approached with the same spirit - eschewing conventional downlight grids in favor of a thoughtful, expressive scheme that supports the home's clean lines and contemporary aesthetic.

Every room in this waterfront home was designed around a relationship with the ocean. Expansive glazing, floating architectural elements, and carefully framed views create a sense of calm that changes throughout the day. The lighting was was designed to extend that experience.

Rather than relying on a conventional ceiling full of downlights, we created a quiet architectural lighting composition that allows the home to reveal itself gradually. Soft perimeter light traces the edges of the architecture, floating vanities and benches glow gently from below, and concealed details draw attention to craftsmanship without announcing the source of the light.

As daylight fades, the house transforms. Tunable white lighting subtly follows the rhythm of the day while sculptural decorative fixtures become moments of jewelry within the architecture. By night, visitors aren't aware of the lighting itself - they simply experience a home that feels calm, expansive, and effortlessly connected to its coastal setting.
