Benny's Maine door signage

Benny’s Maine

Portland, ME | Interiors: Mey & Co. | Construction: Woodhull | Photography: Heidi Kirn

Nestled in the heart of Portland’s Old Port, Benny’s occupies a familiar type of space - narrow, deep, and rich with history from a string of past restaurants. The challenge was to embrace the raw character of the brick walls and layered past while crafting a dive bar experience with just enough refinement to feel intentional and inviting.

Lighting was approached with restraint and precision, reserved only for the moments that mattered: custom millwork displays of Philly sports memorabilia, a richly detailed bar back, the custom-built bar with brass accents, and a peek into the energy of the open kitchen beyond. These focal points are supported by a warm 2700K color temperature throughout, providing a cohesive glow that softens the space and welcomes guests from day to night.

Transitioning between daylight hours and evening service required careful attention to directionality, intensity, and fixture placement. Subtle shifts in brightness and beam angles allow the space to flex between quiet daytime meals and vibrant nighttime crowds, maintaining atmosphere without overwhelming the experience. The result is a bar that feels like your hometown favorite, only better lit.
