Ice Point

York, ME | Architect: Whitten Architects with Jessie Carroll | Interior Designer: Heidi Lachapelle Interiors | Photography: Trent Bell

This contemporary glass-clad home in York, Maine presented both a welcome challenge and an exciting opportunity for creative restraint. The clients envisioned a tranquil, spa-inspired interior, one that prioritized minimal overhead lighting in favor of a softer, more immersive visual experience.

To support this vision, the lighting design leaned heavily on low-level illumination and concealed light sources. Step lights, integrated millwork lighting, and other indirect light alternatives were strategically employed to guide circulation and define architectural moments without overwhelming the space.

By forgoing conventional ceiling-mounted fixtures in most areas, the design allows high-quality finishes—natural stone, wood, and glass—to take center stage. Carefully calibrated color temperatures and dimming capabilities ensure that each material is revealed in its best light, reinforcing a sense of warmth, calm, and understated luxury throughout the home.
